How Does AI Eliminate the "Last Mile" Pain Points in Furniture Delivery? The Practice of Cartage AI and Sundays

Furniture e-commerce company Sundays leverages Cartage AI's Wilson tool to achieve real-time tracking, automatic scheduling, and exception handling, reducing labor costs by hundreds of hours and enhancing customer experience.

Introduction

When consumers wait weeks for an expensive sofa, only to miss the delivery window and fall into customer service black holes, such poor experiences are common in large furniture logistics. Direct-to-consumer furniture brand Sundays is trying to end this dilemma with AI. Through a partnership with freight coordination software company Cartage AI, its AI logistics coordination tool Wilson has helped Sundays automate real-time processes, including freight quotes, booking, tracking, carrier coordination, and exception handling.

Key Progress

Sundays co-founder Moe Samieian Jr. said furniture logistics involves many moving parts, "which can easily consume the team’s time and energy, and as the company grows, the margin for error only shrinks." Traditionally, logistics coordination relies on phone calls, emails, and spreadsheets, but Wilson, as an AI agent, has its own email address and phone number, enabling it to answer customer and internal inquiries about shipping orders just like a human team member. When encountering issues it cannot resolve, Wilson flags and escalates them to the logistics team.

Cartage AI co-founder and CEO Abdul Basharat noted that in the traditional model, logistics coordinators need to log into three or four different portals to check truck availability and rates, while Wilson can perform all these operations simultaneously and identify delays or issues in real time.

Supply Chain Impact

Wilson enables an automated process that "starts working as soon as the sales order is confirmed and closed": it automatically finds, books, and schedules trucks, and notifies pickup and delivery point personnel of estimated arrival times. For Sundays, the biggest pain point is "last mile" visibility across multiple carriers and systems—Wilson consolidates scattered data into a single source of truth, enabling the team to know the real-time location of any order at any moment.

Previously, Sundays customer service had to manually flip through spreadsheets or log into carrier portals one by one to check order status, which was time-consuming and had uneven coverage. Wilson automatically tracks all shipments, saving the team hundreds of hours of work each month, while improving on-time pickup rates and exception response speed.

Regional Impact

The furniture e-commerce market in North America (especially the United States) is highly competitive, and large parcel deliveries typically involve multiple legs of transportation, with carrier systems that are incompatible with each other. The AI coordination solution represented by Wilson helps bridge the "data silos" between these systems, offering valuable insights for direct-to-consumer brands operating in North America.

Industry PerspectiveIndependent supply chain and logistics consultant Nishit Nisudan pointed out that the 24-hour delivery, free shipping, and fast return services offered by e-commerce giants have raised customer expectations to new heights, and furniture companies must keep up. "They either compete to survive and thrive, or die out like many traditional organizations." He observed that many warehouse and transportation management system vendors are integrating AI into their products to achieve better warehouse and transportation utilization, optimize available space, and learn from historical data to improve efficiency.
